Like it or not, we are in the golden age of masses gobbling up any stupid thing with monsters in it. What started in novel form with Pride Prejudice and Zombies. Naturally paved the way for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which is now available on DVD.
And silliness ensues rapidly in this period piece where Honest Abe fights to free the slaves from vampires. We start with a young Abe watching his mother die from a vampire and he vows to destroy the killer without really knowing what is going on. As a man, he runs into a teacher who informs him about the way of the vampire. Specifically, he learns how to kill vampires in slow-motion baton moves with a silver-coated axe.
Not content to be a mere slayer, Abe takes on politics to become president in time of a civil war when the South was using the slaves as vampire food. Yes, the South did rise again, only because they were vampires - which are pretty funny.
The best part of this existing is the fact that we are headed for a day when children will honestly wonder why the U.S. has a vampire hunter on their $5 bill.
On the date-night side of the shelves, we have Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. As the title suggests, the world is ending in three weeks and people are dealing with it. Specifically, we see how insurance salesman Steve Carrel deals with it when his wife literally runs away and he hooks up for adventures with a kooky neighbour. While entertaining enough, it is certainly hard not to compare Seeking with the best end-of-the-world date film of all time. Of course, I'm referring to Don McKellar's 1998 masterpiece Last Night. Find and enjoy.
