Packing up all of their belongings and moving halfway across the country proved to be the right decision for musicians Reid Hendry and Adam Bailie.
The duo made the trek from Ontario to 小蓝视频 in 2009 to form Watasun and their funky, folky sound has already made an impact in the Vancouver scene.
"We were part of a bigger band in Ontario starting in 2007, but after a few years moved out to Vancouver to try something new as a duo," Hendry said. "We got to perform in the 2010 Olympics and have done a ton of Vancouver shows and things are going pretty well for us."
The duo's big break was being discovered by Tourism Vancouver earlier this year. They caught wind of Watasun's song entitled "It's You" and decided to make the song and the tune's accompanying video part of their marketing campaign to promote Vancouver.
"It was a cool experience filming the video and really helped getting our name out there and getting us some exposure," Hendry said.
The video was released in February and has more than 225,000 views on YouTube, with views from all across the world. It sees the duo visiting well-known Vancouver landmarks and highlighting some of the best that the city has to offer.
Watasun will be bringing their energy to the Howe Sound Brew Pub on Saturday (Aug. 18) and plan on rocking Squamish.
"We've played in Squamish before and it's always a good time," Hendry said. "Our music touches on a lot of influences and we bring them all together. It's got a little bit of funk, some folk and a bit of a Caribbean sound too with the steel drums we use."
