The women will be rockin' Saturday, April 12 at the Howe Sound Brew Pub when the venue plays host to "Women in the Round."The mastermind behind the show is Vancouver-based fauxhawked folkie Kate Reid. Heidi Nielson from the Howe Sound Inn said she decided to bring Reid's show to town simply because she is such a fan herself. "Kate's an amazing performer," Heidi said. "I saw her perform once a few years ago, bought her albums, and have been a huge fan ever since."Back in the winter of 2007, Reid said she saw something missing from the Vancouver music scene: a regular evening of women folksingers performing their songs to an engaged audience. She wanted to get some of her favourite performers together on a stage in a songwriters-in-the-round format, an idea reminiscent of 1960s coffee houses. She called her idea Women in the Round. After three hugely successful evenings of Women in the Round, Kate decided to take the show on the road. The show has been everywhere from Prince George to Regina to Edmonton, and just about everywhere in between. People can expect dynamic performances charged with humour and social commentary. "Kate's an outspoken feminist and she is just out of sight," Nielson said. The show's promotional package describes her as "a wise wordsmith who cranks out twisted tunes and truthful tales in a style reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco and Run DMC."Joining forces on the round with Reid are fellow folkies Joanna Chapman-Smith and Sarah MacDougall. Vancouver's Chapman-Smith is an offbeat singer-songwriter who puts on a feisty show. "She croons like she's working the room at a jazzy nightclub cabaret," states the show's press release. Country noir songstress MacDougall, also from Vancouver, has a sound that is described as a saucy mix of June Carter and Johnny Cash with a touch of Swedish minstrel. Reid, Chapman-Smith and MacDougall merge to deliver dynamic stage presence, combining intelligent lyrics, stellar guitar playing and a banter with the audience that makes them feel as though their are sitting in a cozy space swapping stories with these women over a few beers - well in fact, they will be.Tickets for the April 12 show are $8 in advance at the Howe Sound Inn's front desk, or $10 at the door. Doors for the show are 9 p.m. Show starts at 9:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Howe Sound Inn at 604-892-2603.
