Young talent takes centre stage

The stars of the future will shine brightly tonight (June 6), as the 16th edition of Star Search hits the Eagle Eye Theatre stage at 7:30 p.m. Run by the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association (HSPAA), the annual talent competition will spotlight the gifts of 17 young artists, who range from singers and dancers to violinists and rockers. HSPAA vice-president Kristine Miles, the show's producer, said many of these budding artists have created or choreographed their own songs and programs."These kids are really passionate about what they do," Miles said.Judges Catherine Jackson, Paul Lorette and Veronica McPhee will have to choose a top performer in each of the two age categories - six to 11 and 12 to 18 - who will win cash and places on the plaque engraved with the names of past winners and success stories such as John Amenta, Nadine McNeil and Whistler's Ali Milner. But winning isn't everything - Miles said the young performers benefit a great deal just from participating in the show, with its big-time feel, and many non-winners have gone on to pursue their interest in the arts."I think for a lot of kids it's just an opportunity to do their thing," she said. She emphasized the non-competitive aspect of the event, and that organizers go out of their way to treat the kids like professionals. Two previous Star Search participants, Emma Pedersen and David Thomson, will emcee the evening, as Miles tries to make the event as youth-focused as possible.Proceeds from the show's $8 tickets - sold at Mostly Books and Billie's Bouquet - and refreshments sold at intermission go towards the HSPAA's Access Music Education Bursary Fund. The bursary, now in its third year of distribution, supports Squamish kids from kindergarten to Grade 12 who want to pursue arts studies but need financial assistance. Young performers have been able to go to private lessons, camps and other instruction programs, thanks to the donations. And the HSPAA has received great feedback and gratitude from the young talents, Miles said."Kids have really benefited."
