One of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time comes to Squamish for two performances only as the Broadway or Bust youth theatre camp wraps up this weekend.
This summer's production features Broadway or Bust's largest cast ever performing The Music Man, jr. on Friday (July 23) and Saturday (July 24) at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Eye Theatre.
"I'm looking forward to having all 40 participants on the stage at once," said artistic director, Melissa Braun.
The Music Man is a beloved musical that won five Tony awards when it originally opened in 1957. The enduring nature of this classic story is apparent in the success of the two subsequent Broadway revivals and two film adaptations.
The musical tells the story of con man Harold Hill's visit to River City, Iowa whose scam is to convince parents he can teach their musically disinclined children to play musical instruments.
On the premise that he will form a band, he takes orders for instruments and uniforms.
But once the instruments arrive and are paid for, he skips town without forming the band, moving on before he is exposed.
It features well known songs such as "76 Trombones," "Ya Got Trouble," "Til There was You," "Shipoopi," and "Goodnight my Someone."
"It is a show with lots of big production numbers that are going to be very exciting with so many performers," said Braun.
Broadway or Bust summer camp is a locally developed musical theatre intensive. Each summer, the camp presents a show that has been cast, rehearsed and performed all within a three-week time period. Participants are between the ages of seven and 18.
Tickets for the Friday (July 23) and Saturday (July 24) performances at the Eagle Eye Theatre are available at the door and at Billie's Bouquet for $15 for adults and $7 for students.
