60 abandoned vehicles to be towed from provincial land in Squamish

Derelict vehicles causing environmental concerns for Marina Estates’ neighbours to be removed by Friday.

If their owners don't move them by June 13, approximately 60 vehicles left on provincial land near the Marina Estates condos at Pemberton Avenue and Loggers Lane will be towed, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

On June 5, the ministry posted trespass notices on approximately 60 vehicles that have sat on the provincial property, in some cases, for years.

According to a ministry spokesperson, the vehicles left by Friday will be towed and stored pending their owner's retrieval.

"If the owners cannot be located or they do not claim their vehicle, the vehicle will be disposed of. Owners who claim their vehicle will be responsible for associated costs—towing and storage."

The make-shift dumping site has been a thorn in the side of residents who live at the neighbouring Marina Estates.

"Some of them have been here for multiple years and have weeds growing on them now," said Nathan Tack of the condo complex's strata council, while gesturing toward multiple vehicles, some with flat tires, others with mould on them, broken windows and grass growing up around them.

"The abandoned cars are leaking oil into the ground, and garbage bins abound with no bear protection," Tack notes.

Tack said the derelict lot was one of the main reasons his complex built a fence between it and the property.

Dale Coleman, a resident of Marina Estates, said he would be glad to see the lot cleaned up.

"Everything looks like hell," he said, adding that for people driving down the increasingly busy Loggers Lane, it isn't a good look to have the abandoned vehicles lined up to greet them.

"That's ridiculous," he said.

Both men said they felt hopeful to see the trespass notices posted on the vehicles earlier this month.

Now, they just hope the vehicles are actually removed.
