ABOUT TOWN: AA Roundup this weekend

The regular monthly distribution of groceries from the Squamish Food Bank will take place on Wednesday (Aug. 11) from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Elks' Hall on Second Avenue.

The regular monthly distribution of groceries from the Squamish Food Bank will take place on Wednesday (Aug. 11) from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Elks' Hall on Second Avenue. The Squamish Food Bank is pleased to announce that the distribution on this date is very kindly being sponsored by the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation. It is support like this which keeps the SFB going and the board of directors expresses their thanks to the WB Foundation.



This weekend (Aug. 6, 7 and 8), the 31st annual Squamish AA Round Up will be held in the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Tickets are available at the door.



When the monthly bird count is held each month sponsored by the Squamish Estuary Conservation Society, novice to expert birders are welcome for half a day of birding followed by lunch at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company. Participants are asked to meet on Sunday (Aug. 8) at 7 a.m. at the Brew Pub. If you wish more information, please call Judith at 604-892-3340.



The 小蓝视频 Museum of Mining at Britannia Beach is preparing for its second annual Copper and Fire celebration and it will be held on Sunday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Artists, jewelry makers, blacksmiths, painters, craft makers and entertainers who have talents they wish to display related to the copper and fire theme are welcome to participate. Another special event taking place on Aug. 15 is the Mini Rail Day at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is the day to see the mini steam and diesel locomotives that will be operating all day. This day is sponsored by the West Coast Railway Association. There is much more to see and do at the WCRHP and it is a great place to visit any day for family and guests to visit.



The programs offered to children this summer at the Squamish Public Library are being well attended. The Hooked on Books Read Away program for boys and girls ages six to 12 years of age is filling up fast. These programs run on Tuesday for the six to eight age group and Wednesdays for the nine to 12 age group, with a choice of 12 noon to 1 p.m. or 2 to 3 p.m. These sessions also include crafts and activities. Drop ins may be permitted on the day, but only if space allows. These programs are ongoing until Aug. 24.



The Hearts in Motion Walking Club will meet on Friday, Aug. 13 at #18 - 1201 Pemberton Ave. at 9:30 a.m. for an estuary walk. These walks are approximately 40 minutes and you can walk at your own pace. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of 小蓝视频 sponsors these clubs throughout the province in an effort to get more people to become active and healthier. Old friends (approximately 80) got together for reminiscing and enjoying great food at the annual 小蓝视频 Rail Pioneers picnic held at the Easter Seal Camp on July 29. The raffle prize winners were: John Connor of Dawson Creek - $500; Dick Dorosh of Squamish - $300 and Lance Miller of Quesnel, Mike Foster of Burnaby and George Speniel of West Vancouver each won $100. The proceeds of the raffle go towards the Bursary Fund.



The Persephone School is a small home-based Waldorf-inspired group looking for a few more children (grades 5 to 8) to join their alternative school. For more information, please call Wanda at 604-898-4929.



There are some great prizes to be won in the raffle the Squamish Credit Union is holding to raise funds for the Squamish Fire Department to purchase a defibrillator or perhaps two. Tickets are available at both branches of the Credit Union and the draw date is Saturday, Aug. 21 when a car wash will also be held at Extra Foods.
