The eighth annual Journey For Sight Walk gets under way at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Sunday (May 16). This annual event is sponsored by the Squamish Lions Club and members are hoping for a good turnout. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk/jog/run gets off at 10 a.m. by the Brightbill House with acting mayor Sonja Lebans as the official starter. Participants will head through the gates to the dike and onto the Spit and back. All proceeds from the walk benefit the Canadian National Institute for the Blind through the white canes, library services and camperships programs. You are encouraged to take along any used eyeglasses. This can be a great family outing and T-shirts, prize draws and refreshments will be available to those taking part.
Those not participating in the Journey For Sight Walk but wishing to make a donation are asked to take cash or cheques to Mike Jensen at the Squamish Credit Union. Cheques should be made out to the Squamish Lions Club c/o Journey For Sight.
The grand opening of the new Squamish RCMP detachment at 1000 Finch Dr. takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday (May 15) and the public is cordially invited to attend and to check out the new premises.

There will be lots of bargains at the annual Knights of Columbus garage sale to be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on The Boulevard from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday (May 15). Refreshments will be available during the sale. Proceeds of the sale go towards local Knights of Columbus charities.

"Birding for Beginners" invites all participants to meet at Tim Hortons at 8 a.m. on Sunday (May 16) a walk along the estuary spying on our feathered friends. From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. it's "Families Go Wild!" with a walk in the estuary at the Vancouver Street entrance. This is all part of the annual Songbird Festival.
Canadian children's illustrator Bill Slavin will be at the Squamish Public Library on Monday (May 17) at 1:30 p.m. to give a talk and illustrate from the Adventures With the Vikings, one of the nominees for the Red Cedar Award. Schools in the Howe Sound School District have been invited to participate. Children who are home schooled might also enjoy this session.
The Squamish Gardeners will welcome Anne Morrison to a gather at the Squamish Public Library on Monday (May 17) at 7 p.m. Anne writes for Gardens West and on Monday her topic will be unusual bulbs. The cost is $5 for non-members and $2 for members. On June 9, the guest speaker will be Des Kennedy.
Following the Scrabble tournament a few weeks ago, weekly drop-ins to play Scrabble are now being held each Wednesday at the Squamish Public Library from 7 to 8 p.m. Please take along your own game. The sessions are open to all ages.

You will be asked to choose two discussion groups of interest to you including transportation, safety, seniors' centre, nutrition etc. Lunch will be provided and you are asked to register by Friday, May 28 by calling Dana at 604-892-2293.
With Thomas the Tank Engine coming to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in June, the excitement mounts. On Saturday, May 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. the WCRHP will host Chris Awdry, the son of the Rev. W. Awdry who first wrote the books about Thomas. Chris will make the Heritage Park one of three British Columbia stops on his Western Canadian book-signing tour in May.
On Saturday (May 8) a fundraiser for the Howe Sound Curling Club was held and the proceeds will go towards renovations. The event took the form of a golf tournament and Curling Club members thank the Squamish Valley Golf and Country Club for donating green fees and also thank other sponsors for donating prizes.
The Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital wishes to thank the community for the great support given to them at the Mothers' Day raffle and garage sale on May 8. The winners were Ruth Legler (Garden Centre certificate), Scott Nitsch (jewelry box) and Alice Reed (Sunrise Restaurant gift certificate). Proceeds support SGH in purchasing new equipment.
