Art & Soul a success

Squamish showed it had both heart and soul at the third Art and Soul fundraiser for the Squamish skate park on Nov. 6.

Between 120 and 130 people admired art and listened to music at the event at Totem Hall.

Final dollar figures for the amount of money raised for the skate park were unavailable by press time, but Kathy Daniels, volunteer on the skate park committee, thought between $2,000 and $3,000 was raised.

"Kudos to Squamish. This is hard to do," Daniels said.

It was the third Art and Soul even in Squamish in a 12-month period - the last one was this past February, with the first one last November - and although the turnout for this event wasn't as large as the past two, it was still a great party.

"The band did really well," Daniels said. "We didn't shut down until we had to."

Local nine-piece rhythm and blues band Rhythm Method played spiritedly into the evening.

The event featured six artists from places like Squamish and Vancouver. The artists started their paintings at the beginning of the evening, and worked until they were finished.

Art wasn't only on the walls or easels. Hair models wandered the event with hair sculpture by Kylie O'Grady. On of the models had her hair created into a tree.

"I loved it, it was great," Daniels said. "Kylie is a real artist."

The last two Art and Soul events raised over $15,000 and brought in around 600 people total, said Richard Trann, another volunteer on the skate park committee.

The land for the park around the Squamish Youth Centre has been cleared and ready for prefill. In the meantime, the skate park is still fundraising by searching for grants.
