COVID-19 testing site in Squamish closed today due to weather

Pandemic numbers for Howe Sound at 208; tests for those eligible available at an alternate site.

The saw 208 positive COVID-19 tests for the week of Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. 

Last week, there were 391 positive cases. 

The testing site at the former Shady Tree was closed on Christmas Day and open with shortened hours on Dec. 24 and 31. 

Though the site was overwhelmed, those who qualified for a PCR or rapid test were still able to receive one.

On Jan. 6, the was forced to close due to weather conditions. A torrent of snow that fell overnight.

"This temporary closure is a precautionary step to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both our staff and people accessing care. The site will be reopened to the public for testing services once it is safe to do so," reads a Vancouver Coastal Health post.

Those who are eligible for testing can attend the Sea To Sky Hotel vaccination clinic from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for access to rapid antigen testing. 

Residents of Squamish and surrounding communities can also attend any VCH testing site to get tested for COVID-19."

According to the health authority, all testing sites are dealing with an influx of folks wanting to be tested. 

"To preserve testing capacity for those at higher risk from COVID-19, people do not need to get a test if they are fully vaccinated, have mild symptoms, and are able to self-isolate until symptoms improve."

From January 2020 to December of 2021, Howe Sound logged 4,199 positive cases. For every 100,000 people in our region, there are over 8,000 cases of COVID-19, in other words. 

Thus, the current released positive COVID-19 numbers are likely lower than the actual number of cases. 

 

Vaccines

Ninety-four per cent of adults have had their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine as of Jan. 4, while 15% have had their third shot, or booster. 

Among children five years old to 11, 43% have had their first shot to date. 

Vancouver Coastal Health vaccination clinics are being held at the Sea To Sky Hotel: Jan. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Jan. 11 to 13; 17 to 19; 24 to 26 and 31.

Feb 1, 2, 7 to 9; and 14 to 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. then re-opening from 2 p m. to 6 p.m.
