Driving Squamish: Sun Run impacting traffic on Hwy 99 this morning

Also, Sea to Sky Road conditions to be aware of today—April 27.
transporttruckseatoskyhighway00

The Squamish from Environment Canada shows it will be sunny again today.

April 27 will see a high of 20 C and a low of 6 C overnight.

A pleasant day to be on the Sea to Sky Highway.

Despite the horrific tragedy in Vancouver last night, with a driver plowing into a crowd at the Filipino festival, the Vancouver Sun Run is going ahead this morning.

On X, organizers said they had been told by law enforcement that there was no larger threat to public safety. There will be extra police on the route to make participants more comfortable,

Therefore, the run will impact traffic—including a lane closure—between W Pender St and Lions Gate Bridge for 3.3 km (West Vancouver to Vancouver)—this morning  until 11:30 a.m.

Duffey news

If you drive The Duffey (Duffey Lake Road—Highway 99 to non-locals), you have likely wondered if the dang road is set to be repaved anytime soon.

Well, we have the answer.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit tells The СÀ¶ÊÓƵ that there are plans to complete 15 km of hard surfacing on Highway 99 between Cayoosh Bridge and Boulder Creek Bridges, 10 to 25 km west of Lillooet.

This work will occur this year at a time yet to be determined.

So, that is something!

Now onto other things to know if you are driving in the Sea to Sky today.

Watch for wildlife

Watch for wildlife as deer and bears have been seen along the highway in our region in the last few days.

For example, according to a social media post, a bear was spotted Thursday evening along the highway near Whistler RV & Campground on the northbound side of the road.

Report any wildlife sightings or encounters to the Conservation Officer Service Hotline at 1.877.952.7277.

New traffic control equipment

You may encounter a new device on Squamish roads.

The District announced that it now has an Automatic Flagging Assistance Device (AFAD).

It is like a metal flagger.

"AFADs are portable, remotely operated units that help manage traffic while reducing risks for traffic controllers. Each device features red and yellow traffic lights and a gate arm with a fluorescent orange flag that moves up and down into the travel lane to guide drivers," the District said in a post on its social media channels.

The aim of using it is to improve safety and efficiency around work zones, the District says.

"These devices are permitted for use only on two-lane, two-way roads or on multi-lane roads that have been temporarily reduced to a single lane. They are commonly used in situations involving single-lane alternating traffic or short-term traffic stoppages near active work areas."

Spit Road closure

The Squamish Training Berm will be temporarily closed now until May 31, the Squamish River Watershed Society says.

"The continues as we install a fourth large fish-friendly box culvert," a social media post from the society notes.

"This feature will replace the current undersized culvert, which will improve fish access and allow freshwater to transfer into the central estuary channel from the Squamish River."

According to a "access will be closed to car traffic at the Fisherman's entrance—yellow gate—with bike and pedestrian access to remain open."

Gas prices

The removal of the carbon tax has had an impact on local gas prices.

In Squamish today, regular gas in town is going for 152.9 cents per litre at most area stations.

Before the carbon tax was removed, gas in town was at about 178.9/L.

(The СÀ¶ÊÓƵ government cancelled the carbon tax by introducing legislation to drop the rate to $0, effective Tuesday, April 1.)

In Whistler, regular gas is on offer for 152.9/L, at the Co-op at 2101 Lake Placid Rd.

In Pemby, petrol is on offer for 152.9/L, at most area stations.

Some of the cheapest gas in СÀ¶ÊÓƵ, at, can be found in Oliver today, at the Canco, located on 8102 СÀ¶ÊÓƵ-97.
