In 2018, at the start of her master’s degree in music in Scotland, Jocelyn Pettit met a cellist taking the same program.
The pair had similar styles and ambitions, and was passionate about sharing traditional Celtic and folk music.
Pettit, a fiddler who is based in Squamish, returned to 小蓝视频 in the summer of 2020 after finishing her master’s and, during the pandemic lockdown, started to create and “focus on what could be possible.”
She produced two albums during that time: All It Brings, an award-winning output with cellist Ellen Gira, who went on to obtain her PhD in music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, and Wind Rose with her band.
This weekend, the musician, step dancer, singer and composer will be in Coquitlam to bring her tunes and international flair to Festival du Bois, the city’s annual francophone party at Mackin Park in Maillardville.
Pettit and her band — made up of Erik Musseau (whistle, pipes, piano, vocals); Andy Hillhouse (guitar, vocals); Boris Favre (bass, piano, vocals); and David Pender Lofgren (bodhrán) — will perform at Mackin House on Saturday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m. before taking the Main Stage at 3:20 p.m. They also play on Sunday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m.
A regular performer at Festival du Bois, Pettit said she loves returning for “the energy and the celebration of traditional music, food and dance. It’s an excellent community gathering,” she told the Tri-City News on March 3.
Pettit promises a lively set of original and traditional tunes sung in English and French, as well as a few new compositions with French content.
Festival du Bois is one of their first shows of the year, which will be followed by dates this month at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster, CelticFest Vancouver and Squamish.
Pettit and Gira have a busy spring lined up, too, with three shows in Gira’s home state of Maryland plus four dates in Scotland with the Woodlands Duo. And, in May, Pettit and Gira are also touring the United Kingdom to drop their second album; a release party is planned in June in Vancouver.
