An RCMP investigation is underway after two horses were struck and killed by a vehicle north of Pemberton on Oct. 12.

Early commuters got a shock this morning after a vehicle struck at least two horses north of Pemberton.

The incident occurred on Highway 99 in the early hours of Thurs, Oct. 12 near North Arm Farm.

“It was bad,” said Claire Hayes, who came across the scene, and posted to Facebook warning parents to shield their children from it.

“Two horses were dead on the road, a mum and her foal. The intestines were spread across the road.”

Joel Hampshire passed the scene at 7 a.m. this morning when there was one lane of alternating traffic. He also saw two “seriously damaged horse corpses” and a car off the road.

Though firm details are currently sparse, RCMP say an investigation is underway.

“There was a collision on the highway between a vehicle and some horses,” said Cpl. James Gilmour.

“We are still investigating the collision and it appears there is more at play than just the horses being on the highway. There were no major injuries, but the driver’s actions are also being investigated.”

The incident was called in by a passerby, said Cst. Michael Sullivan, who urged people to slow down on that stretch of the highway.

“The road is very dangerous, especially when it comes into winter time, with fog rolling in,” he said. “It gets icy. These horses are dark and they’re very difficult to see. We do a see a lot of people driving faster than they should. We would encourage people to slow down."
