Most locals likely first heard of the Pioneer Way Extension project—near the Sandman Hotel and Suites—back in 2020. So where is the project at now?
The District says that the Pioneer Way Phase 2 work is expected to be complete by the end of October.
"At the end of Phase 2, the multi-use pathway will be paved, but the road will remain unpaved and inaccessible to public vehicles until Phase 3, when the new road is tied in—connected—to Government Road to the north," said District spokesperson Rachel Boguski in an email to The 小蓝视频.
Phase 3 will involve the design and construction of the stretch of road from Aspen Road to Government Road.
"There is no current timeline for Phase 3 of this project,” said Boguski.
Ultimately, the Pioneer Way Extension project will extend Pioneer Way from Queens Way to the intersection of Government Road and Centennial Road, forming a new thoroughfare.
All told, there will have been a two-lane expansion, sidewalks, a paved multi-use separated pathway, roadway lighting, new storm infrastructure, intersection upgrades, and the Discovery Trail to Government Road upgrade.
The District says the expanded road will serve as a main entry into the Business Park from the north side of Squamish, helping decrease traffic through the residential Northyards neighbourhood.
