The Howe Sound Bald Eagles are no strangers to the finals of the Pacific Cup Tournament.
Last year, the team placed second in the Alberta division. The history books show that the Jolly Miller Hawks won 4-3 over the local oldtimers in the final Alberta division game.
Team spokesman Rhe Lacoursiere said in earlier years his team placed second in the tournament that attracts more than 100 teams each year.
This was the breakthrough year at the Pacific Cup. The Howe Sound Bald Eagles tied their first game and won the next two for a berth to the division final against Port Alberni.
"In the third game, our goalie was hurt in the second period," Lacoursiere said. "Joe Webber is our only goalie, we don't have a backup. One of the players on the other team had a breakaway and Joe went down doing the splits to make the save. He pulled something."
With their only goalie out of the game, Dan Moberg stepped between the pipes.
"He had a little past experience in goal," said Lacoursiere. "He played the final period and the final game. He did really well. Joe was the reason we made it to the finals. He coached the last game."
Lacoursiere felt the team really gelled at the Victoria tournament. The victory is good for morale as the team prepares for the 2004 Canadian Adult Recreational Hockey Association World Cup in Ottawa Mar. 28 to Apr. 4.
"Hopefully, Joe will be ready for the World Cup," Lacoursiere said.
The Bald Eagles are scheduled to participate in a series of games leading up to the tournament, including a tilt at Brennan Park in early March against the Vancouver Canuck Alumni.
