It's going to have to be all about control - but winning is still nice.
The Bantam division Squamish Titans played an aggressive game in Gordon Sturtridge League (GSL) football play Sunday (Sept. 26) at Brennan Park and beat the Redskins 19-0.
"It went our way right from the get-go," said Titans coach Rob Ryan. "We were never in trouble."
Ryan said although defence drove the game, only the second game for the team this season, the offence improved.
Running back Daniel Reoch opened the scoring on a 33-yard run, then scrambled 13 yards on a broken play to score the extra point, giving the Titans a 7-0 first quarter lead.
Quarterback Joel Prevost, number 11, passed to Frank LeBlanc for a 24-yard completion for the Titans second touchdown.
Prevost threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Zelenski, which was the final touchdown of the game.
The Titans' Bryan Phillips intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter, ending the Redskins' final drive of the game.
Ryan also attributed the Titans' win to powerful defence.
"Defence is the strong side of the ball right now," he said.
He wants to see the team develop offensively but knows it is more difficult to play a strong offensive game.
Offensive play is scripted and more technical, so it tends to be the hardest part of the game to develop, he said.
The team had only big yards, or none at all, and needs to work on making the plays consistent, Ryan said."We'd like to develop a really controlled game," Ryan said.
Ryan said the team, although it has experienced some "growing pains" because of an influx of new players, is starting to work together.
"We're teaching the kids to work as a team, rather then individuals and developing a work ethic," Ryan said.
The Bantam Titans are a young team. Twelve of its members are in their first year as bantam players, at age 14.
"It's a good group," Ryan said. "We're young, which is a benefit. We've got two seasons to grow with them."
Ryan said he wants to see the team go to the finals in November, because the Titans have been there for the past four years.
The next Bantam Titans home game is next Sunday (Oct. 10) at 1:30 p.m. versus the Raiders at Brennan Park.
On Sept. 26, the Raiders beat the Titans 14-6.
