Gadge Jhuty Memorial hockey tonight

Hockey meets good causes at the 2nd Annual Gadge Jhuty Memorial Fundraiser game tonight (Oct. 27) at 7 p.m. at Brennan Park.

Hockey meets good causes at the 2nd Annual Gadge Jhuty Memorial Fundraiser game tonight (Oct. 27) at 7 p.m. at Brennan Park.

The event is held in honour of local Howe Sound Men's Hockey league goaltender and one-time league president, Gadge Jhuty, who passed away just over two years ago from the effects of Neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nervous system.

Stephen Fryer, one of the organizers of the event, said that after the first fundraiser in 2005 there was every hope of turning the memorial game into an annual family night. He added that each year a select team of HSMHL players would take on a team invited in for the night. Last year, the competition came from staffers of The Fox (CFOX) FM radio station in Vancouver; tonight's guest team is made of Vancouver Firefighters.

"We want to raise funds and awareness for minor hockey in the town, it's such a great sport," said Fryer. "And at the same time we should all support those going through cancer."

Fryer said the proceeds from last year, $3,230, were evenly split between the Canadian Cancer Society and Squamish minor hockey. This year's recipients will be local hockey and the 小蓝视频 Children's Hospital.

"Gadge was such a good friend and there are so many ways to describe him," he said. "He was very passionate and loved hockey, and love to share good time with friends. He was always into hockey, especially in Squamish."

Entry to the game is by donation and there will be "lots of family entertainment and raffles" followed by an adults-only dance at 8:30 p.m., featuring the band Davey's Locker. Three mascots - Gary Baldy, IC小蓝视频 Captain Click and the Children's Hospital Spirit Bear will also be there.

Harlem Crowns bring basketball to HSSS

The fabulous Harlem Crowns basketball team, founded by Harlem Globetrotter Charlie Smith, are coming to town to take on Howe Sound Secondary School's senior boys team in the school gym on Monday night (Oct. 30).

Very much a family event with the best in basketball skills on display, the Crowns combine razzle-dazzle ball handling, precision pass-patterns, trick shooting and comedy to give the crowd a great evening of fun for all. The team promises that a real game will be played in and around the jokes and pranks.

"It's a fundraiser for our basketball program to offset the travel costs for our team, buy equipment and get new uniforms," said HSS Athletic Director Ryan Massey.

The Crowns have a busy on-the-road season, playing a total of 150 games this year in the United States, Canada and Asia.

The game will begin at 7 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $7 in advance (tickets can be bought at the Howe sound secondary office) and $8 at the door.
