Squamish's Owen Carney, one of the founders of the Whistler Weasel Workers, will be inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame on Nov. 13 in Ottawa.
Carney's induction into the national Hall of Fame is the culmination of 30 years of contributions to the sport. In addition to his work with the Weasel Workers, he has been a director with the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, the Coast Alpine Event Club and the Vancouver Ski Foundation.
Carney, who owns Carney's Waste Systems, became involved in the sport when his son Michael reached the national competitive level. The name "Weasel Worker" originated when Carney-led volunteer workers boot-packed sections of a run on Whistler Mountain called The Weasel for a World Cup downhill event.
Since then, the Weasel Workers have grown into a club of more than 400 volunteers, led by Carney. The Weasel Workers have helped with scores of national- and international-level events.
Carney has served as Chief of Course for every World Cup, Canadian and North American race to take place in Whistler since the early 1980s. He has also made many road trips to other venues - he worked on the 1988 Calgary Olympics course, where his son Michael finished as the top Canadian, and he took a team of Weasel Workers to the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.
