Test of Metal Rider Profile: Chessy Langford

Age: 37

Why are you taking the Test?

I do love riding my bike, but also I just want to see if I can survive the race.

How many times have you taken the Test?

First timer!

What is your best personal time?

Well, I am hoping to break the 5-hour barrier

How long have you been racing?

Never done much racing, and I don't think of myself as much of a racer. Just happy to be out on my little bike.

Do you have an inspiring racer?

Wow, any of our wonderfully talented Canadian female riders, either in the cross-country category or the downhill category. Canada breeds some phenomenal riders!

What kind of frame do you use?

A Cove Hustler. It's a locally made frame (from Deep Cove bike shop in North Vancouver). It's got four inches of rear travel, and five inches of front travel.

What's your training regime?

To be honest, I don't really have one. I ride as much as I can, and beer is actually an important part of my training regime.

Do you have an energy boost secret?

No, I wish I did. My roommate has hooked me up with a good protein supplement because I'm small and don't pack a lot of reserves. Otherwise, sleep is pretty critical for keeping the energy up.

What do you expect your biggest challenge to be during the race?

The climbs, absolutely the climbs. I love the descents; they aren't too hard. But the climbing is tough!

Trail Maintenance = TEST ENTRY!

Anyone who missed out on getting into the Test of Metal this year need not despair. People can participate in trail maintenance and get free, guaranteed entry into the race. All you have to do is participate in four out of six official trail days. Each session lasts about three hours and involves moderate physical labour. There are only two opportunities left - June 4 at 9:30 a.m. and June 11 at 9:30 a.m. - so you must have already participated in two maintenance days already to qualify. To register, or get more information, contact Mike Truelove by e-mail at: [email protected] or go to www.testofmetal.com and click on volunteers.
