'Tis the season to play football

Whether you're four foot six or six foot four, there may be a spot for you on a local football division - and benefits extend well beyond just playing the game.

Whether you're four foot six or six foot four, there may be a spot for you on a local football division - and benefits extend well beyond just playing the game.

Kids between the ages six and 15 are encouraged to come out for football registration on Wednesday (June 13) and Thursday (June 14) from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Brennan Park athletic centre.

And to entice and inspire prospective players, Squamish Titans Football organizers are introducing a new clinic taught by the talented coaching staff at the University of British Columbia.

The clinic is open to all Squamish players between 10 and 17 years of age at a cost of $25 per person.

"We are very excited about this clinic and hope to make it an annual event," said Squamish Gordon Sturtridge Football League co-ordinator Rob Ryan. "The clinic will provide young football players a great opportunity to improve their fundamentals by working with some great players and coaches from the U小蓝视频 Thunderbirds Football Team."

Another enticement to play is the proximity team members have to the CFL's 小蓝视频 Lions.

Those who registered during the last round of recruiting on May 12 and 13 were given two free tickets to the 小蓝视频 Lions exhibition game against the Saskatchewan Rough Riders on June 15.

This year marks the third consecutive year that the 小蓝视频 Lions have donated free tickets to all youth football players in the Lower Mainland, Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton.

And that's just the beginning of 小蓝视频 Lions' involvement with young players.

"We are currently talking with Lui Passaglia of the 小蓝视频 Lions in hopes of hosting the third annual practice with the 小蓝视频 Lions," said Ryan.

"This event has been a great success the past two years."

The Squamish Titans have played in the GSL, which represents teams from Deep Cove to Squamish, including a few players from Pemberton and Whistler, since 1962.

The football season runs from the beginning of September until the end of November with games on Sundays. Rosters are based on a first come, first serve basis.

Registration fees for contact football include helmets, shoulder pads, mouth guards, and game jerseys.

The league is always looking for volunteer coaches, referees, team managers, and game day assistants. To help out, or for more information contact Rob Ryan at 604-898-9785, email [email protected], or go to www.gslfootball.ca.
