OTTAWA — Newly minted Liberal leader Mark Carney is promising a "seamless" and "quick" transition as he takes the reins from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Carney spoke today — a day after his resounding victory in the leadership race — following a meeting with Trudeau and a separate gathering with the Liberal caucus on Parliament Hill.

In the coming days, Carney will need to be sworn in as prime minister, choose a new cabinet and sort out his plans for the coming federal election.

But the timeline for all of this remains unclear — and even Liberal MPs say they have no idea when the federal election will happen.

They say that's ultimately up to Carney or the opposition parties in the current minority Parliament.

An early election call is widely expected within days or weeks of Carney being installed as prime minister.
