LONDON 鈥� Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he spoke with King Charles about Canada's sovereign future as U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly suggests that Canada should become the 51st state.
In a social media post Monday, which included a photo of Trudeau and the King shaking hands, the prime minister said the two "spoke about matters of importance to Canadians 鈥� including, above all, Canada鈥檚 sovereign and independent future."
Trudeau was in London for a weekend security summit 鈥� making Canada the only non-European nation represented in talks on how to ensure a possible Ukraine ceasefire actually holds.
The prime minister visited King Charles Monday morning at his Sandringham estate, and as is custom, Buckingham Palace did not mention the topics of conversation in its readout.
The King is also set to welcome Trump to Britain at a later date 鈥� an invitation the British media has attacked since Friday, when Trump shocked the world by publicly scolding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the White House.
Analysts say Trudeau's visit to the security summit was meant to maintain Canada's role in the transatlantic alliance as Trump pulls back from NATO and blames Ukraine for Russia's invasion.
