61-year-old Ottawa man charged with murder in alleged femicide: police

OTTAWA — Ottawa police have charged a 61-year-old man with murder after a woman was found dead inside a home in the suburb of Barrhaven. Police identified the woman as 60-year-old Brenda Rus, who shares a last name with the accused.

OTTAWA — Ottawa police have charged a 61-year-old man with murder after a woman was found dead inside a home in the suburb of Barrhaven.

Police identified the woman as 60-year-old Brenda Rus, who shares a last name with the accused.

They described the case as a femicide, understood as the intentional killing of a woman because of their gender that can take several forms, including intimate partner violence.

Police did not offer details about the relationship between the woman and the accused.

They say officers were called Saturday night to the home on Bentbrook Crescent where they found Rus dead.

The 61-year-old man from Ottawa has been charged with first-degree murder and appeared in court Sunday.
