Squamish editorial: Three honks for Wilson!

Wilson should run for prime minister. Hear us out. The Canada goose has captured the hearts of locals and people across the country.

Wilson should run for prime minister.

Hear us out.

The Canada goose has captured the hearts of locals and people across the country.

He went from injured bird with an arrow in his rump, tracked for seven months by conservationists, to being rescued by a gaggle of fine humans, to being set free at Brennan Park on Sunday, complete with the cheers and tears of an adoring crowd.

What a comeback story! Just what every politician needs.

And, having Canada right in his name is on brand for these tariff-and-51st-state threatening times.

Fellow geese are likely to fall in line with his late entry as a candidate, too. There are signs they have been rallying for Wilson for at least a decade.

Remember back in 2015, when the 鈥嬧 with then-wannabe prime minister Justin Trudeau was crashed by honking geese?

Trudeau could barely get a word in for all the honking.

It was a rally, of sorts, but most of us missed it.

And, due to his injury, Wilson has a slight limp when he walks (waddles), reminiscent of the British prime minister, Winston Churchill, who guided Britain out of some of its darker days. (He was problematic for other reasons, but he did provide steady leadership and rally the country, as Wilson seems to be doing.)

On a serious note, the story of the goose hurt by a human鈥檚 cruel arrow, and then rescued by kinder humans, is evidence of our immense power to impact wildlife, for good or ill.

Megan Erickson, acting wildlife rehabilitation manager for , where Wilson has been nursed back to health over the last two months, said she hopes that this power is what readers get from his story.

鈥淭here are natural phenomena that impact wildlife, yes, but human-related injury and death are the main problems we see with our wildlife, and we have to do everything that we can to mitigate that,鈥 she said.

鈥淧eople developing land reduces habitat for animals. Highways create zones [where] wildlife get hit with vehicles, homes and office buildings have windows that birds will fly into. Pet cats being outside is the number one cause of death for all birds in the world.鈥

So right now, with the world so topsy-turvy, we need a story like Wilson鈥檚.

He鈥檚 a reminder of the worst and the best we can be.
