Woodfibre LNG is releasing most of its leased units in the Sirocco building downtown as one-year rentals.
Woodfibre LNG leased the Sirocco One building for its staff, but with the start of construction delayed until next summer, the company is releasing 36 of its 46 units for a firm one-year rental period, according to Woofibre LNG director of communications, Rebecca Scott.
"Until recently, we expected to have our own senior construction staff move into the Sirocco One building this year," Scott told The Chief by email.
The company announced at the end of March that it has applied to the provincial Environmental Assessment Office for a five-year extension to its environmental certificate for its planned Squamish liquefied natural gas export facility.
Scott said at the time that Woodfibre was pushing the start of construction until 2021 in part because a fabrication yard it was counting on shut down in Asia due to COVID-19.
Another factor was that its favoured U.S. construction contractor for the marine portion of its project has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and thus won't be able to start work until next year.
"In the meantime, we will open up unused units for public rental on fixed, one-year leases. These rentals will be co-ordinated through an external agency. While we await the start of construction, we hope this new opportunity will help relieve pressure on Squamish鈥檚 rental market."
The units are available for May 1.
