Not only will the Richmond Hospital rebuild cost about $1 billion more than first anticipated, but the construction timeline has been moved from 2031 to 2033.

The fall fiscal update from the provincial government reflected the new cost of the project of $1.959 billion, up from the original projection of $861 million.

But the fall update also notes the completion date has been amended to "align with revised project schedule."

Provincial expenses are expected to be $1.3 billion higher than projected in February's budget.

Budgets for some projects across the province have gone down, at times due to federal funding.

However, the two largest increases were the Richmond Hospital budget and the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain expansion, whose budget has increased by almost $2 billion.

The provincial 2024/25 deficit is now projected at $9 billion, up from $7.9 billion projected in February.

The Richmond Hospital rebuild will add 113 more  beds, increasing the number from 246 to 359. There will also be more operating rooms and the Emergency Department will be expanded.
