The City of Prince Rupert is rolling out the welcome mat to industry to pitch potential uses for a waterfront industrial site that formerly hosted a pulp mill.
Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond on Wednesday took advantage of the Globe Forum in Vancouver – a magnet for clean energy advocates and entrepreneurs – to announce his city is issuing a request for expressions of interest to repurpose an industrial site on Watson Island, where a pulp mill shut down more than a decade ago.
There is currently a propane export terminal on the site, but there is a lot more land available for development, Pond told BIV.
“We have one of the largest industrial water licences in the province,” he said. “We have a hydro substation that we own ourselves, there’s natural gas delivered to the site, there’s rail, it’s at tidewater.”
Pond said potential uses for the site could be “everything from biomass energy through to wind energy.”
“There is certainly opportunity for hydrogen,” he added.
The city will be taking expressions of interest until Aug. 30.
