WINNIPEG — Online retail outlet Amazon says it has halted all shipments of machetes and other long-bladed weapons to Manitoba addresses.

The move comes after the Manitoba government enacted new rules in December to limit in-store sales of such items to minors, after a series of assaults involving machetes.

The new law also requires retail outlets in the province to keep the instruments out of reach of the general public, and to keep records of sales for two years.

Justice Minister Matt Wiebe wrote to online retailers such as Amazon and Walmart Canada to ask them to follow the intent of the law.

He says he's glad that Amazon has acted and is hoping other online retailers follow suit.

A spokesperson for Amazon says controls are now in place to prevent customers with a Manitoba shipping address — both adults and minors — from purchasing long-bladed weapons.
