The Metro Vancouver weather forecast includes a significant rainstorm later this week.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Ken Dosanjh says some showers are expected on Thursday, Aug. 22 following Wednesday.

"Summer storms are typically isolated," he notes, adding that the current showers should transition to a more organized rainstorm overnight Friday.

Heavier rain is expected to fall in a 12-hour window on Friday night, producing 20 to 40 mm of precipitation in the short window. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) typically receives 36.1 mm of rain in August, meaning the region could see an average month's rain in mere hours.

"So far YVR has seen 12 mm of rain this month, which is only 22 per cent of the average," he said.

Metro Vancouver weather forecast includes "fall-esque" storm

Dosanjh says the current system is more similar to autumn storms, describing it as "fall-esque" because it carries widespread rain over a long period.

The heavy rainfall should ease heading into Saturday but another wet event is expected heading into next week.

"We also are noticing a system on Monday night that will impact Metro Vancouver, with a cold front and precipitation but with [lower] amounts [than Friday's storm]," he explained.
