And the winners are — Ella Hamill and Katerina Terry from Howe Sound Secondary for their courtyard revitalization project.

Five organizations entered the Squamish Youth Council’s Bear’s Den, but only one winner walked away with the $10,000 grant funding.

This year’s winners — announced at a packed Eagle Eye Theatre on April 20 —  were Ella Hamill and Katerina Terry from Howe Sound Secondary for their courtyard revitalization project.

The other four organizations — OurSquamish, SORCA, Squamish Youth Services and Evan’s Lake — still walked away with $1,000 in funding for their projects.

The courtyard revitalization project is continuing to fundraise until May 12, but the $10,000 is a considerable chunk out of its $60,000 goal.

A news release stated that it also is hoping for funding from the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation.

“At Howe Sound Secondary we pride ourselves on creating a safe environment for students to truly be themselves, feel comfortable and connect with peers. As 90% of Squamish students will go to high school at HSS, the revitalization of the school’s courtyard is a must,” reads the fundraiser release.

“We want the students to be able to enjoy a beautiful space outside, covered from rain or sun and surrounded by plants to promote mental health and connection.”

With a revamped courtyard, the release states that the public would also be allowed to rent the space once completed.
